![]() ![]() ![]() Tough and morbid topics are broached-death, abuse, homophobia-but not sensationalized. In the final act of the story, the mystery component-June’s secrets, the text messages, Sydney’s father’s death, and the identity of the true antagonist-tumble out in a fast (if somewhat predictable) whirlwind of pages. The emotional character- and relationship-driven story arcs move slowly without sacrificing narrative tension. At the same time, she develops a friendship with June-who had been one of her father’s patients-that quickly turns into an infatuation and then obsession (made awkward when Sydney befriends June’s longtime boyfriend). While drowning in grief-depicted in a visceral, pitch-perfect first-person voice-Sydney links her father’s death to mysterious text messages she’s receiving that contain harassing, homophobic content. She’s surprised to see her high school’s resident golden girl, June, at the funeral. Sydney’s devastated by her father’s sudden death and can’t help thinking there was more to the story than a random accident-after all, as the town’s only therapist, he knew everyone’s secrets. ![]() In the depths of intense grief, a teen suspects her father’s fatal car accident was actually murder. ![]() ![]() ![]() A Far Better Rest imagines his missing personal history and makes him the center of this tragic tale. Yet Dickens is silent about the circumstances that transformed Carton from a promising youth to an embittered alcoholic and finally to the man who makes the ultimate sacrifice for love. Carton disappears from the novel for eleven chapters and several years, reappearing without warning to bring the novel to its chilling and heartbreaking end. Dickens' novel tells us the stories of Charles Darnay, Lucie Manette, and Alexandre Manette. In Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, Sydney Carton is an almost ancillary character. The French Revolution is vividly brought to life in a brilliant retelling of the classic story that has captured the imagination of readers since the 1850s. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Intact from his earlier series are the gothic wackiness, linguistic play and literary allusions. With the help and/or hindrance of girls Moxie and Ellington, can Snicket keep his promises and come close to solving a mystery? Author Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) returns with a tale of fictional-character Snicket’s early years, between his unconventional education and his chronicling of the woes of the Baudelaires. Nothing’s what it seems…well, the adults are mostly nitwits…and Snicket is usually preoccupied with someone he left in the city doing something he should be helping her do. To Fear The Dawn caught my attention from the cover, which is bold and fierce, and it sustained my attention till the end. The idea of an imminent danger also makes you feel as if you are right alongside the characters and, just like them, you don't know exactly what you are up against. To Fear The Dawn makes you feel as if you are watching an exciting movie it is action-packed, interesting and suspenseful. Evil seems to be gaining ground how long can good hold out? The trio ( Nicholas, Decklin and Lajé) eventually become bound together by their common interest, which is to protect themselves from Hypatia's children and bring them down. Nicholas finds an ally and trusted friend in Decklin Kanabas after he escaped from prison because his life was being threatened by the same people who tried to frame him. ![]() Sean Young clearly showed the battle between good and evil in To Fear The Dawn, with the good side comprising Nicholas Gallagher (the computer genius and billionaire), Decklin Kanabas (the controversial priest), and Lajé Jaffa (the last of her kind), with Hypatia's children representing the evil side (prominent men and women who had infiltrated all sectors in a bid to carry out their global conspiracy and control the world). The battle between good and evil is a common occurrence in our world. It's a really interesting (if you can overlook the frequent Hofstadterisms), long, detailed book on translation at a level much like these examples from The Little Prince. Stephen, if by some fluke you haven't yet read Hofstadter's Le Ton Beau de Marot, I strongly recommend it. *Although some adults may be wise enough to understand it too. In addition to the French original, there are a number of translations of the book at the same site. I'm pleased to note that the complete text of Antoine de Saint Exupéry's marvelous children's book*, Le petit prince, is online in its entirety at a site called Wikilivres - a web site hosted in Canada, which is why the book can be hosted at there: apparently the book is in the public domain up north. ![]() ![]() One look into Nurse Davis' eyes and he finds himself wanting things he knows a convict like him will never have.
